Term	Nihonji	Description
chūi, n.	注意	Warning.
genten, n.	減点	Demerit (lit., ‘points deducted’)
hikiwake, n.	引き分け	A tie or draw in a game. May be translated as “a pulling apart.”
ippon, n.	一本	One point (i.e., a long cylindrical thing). One point (scoring). Note that ‘ppon’ (yes, two ‘p’s) and ‘hon’ are counters, and don’t necessarily mean fingers. ‘ippon’ could also refer to bottles of beer or rivers.
jissen kumite, n.	実戦組手	Actual, for-real, combat. Self-defence in a live situation.
jiyū kumite, n.	自由組手	Freely/at will/unrestricted.
kamaete, v.	構えて	(Dictionary form: kamaeru 構える.) Be at the ready.
kumite, n.	組手	Sparring. The kanji mean ‘grapple hands.’ See te.
shikkaku, n.	失格	Disqualification.
shushin, n.	主審	Referee. The kanjis represent “principal judge.”
yakusoku kumite, n.	約束組手	Pre-arranged kumite forms.
